NNVAWI Award Nominations Due June 7, 2013

Anticipation is Building-NNVAWI 19th International Conference

In less than one month we will all gather again to network and share our emerging and innovative ideas about how to prevent, address and respond to violence against women. When you receive this email, we would appreciate it if you would take just a few minutes before your weekend starts to:

1. Nominate a colleague for a NNVAWI practice and policy, research, education or service award.

2. Spread the news about the conference and forward the registration details to any colleagues, students or organizations who might be interested in attending.

3. Let colleagues and students know that there is still time to submit a poster for presentation at the conference.

4. Consider standing for election to the NNVAWI Board of Directors

NNVAWI Award Nominations Due June 7, 2013

At each conference, we acknowledge members who have demonstrated excellence in violence against women work with a series of awards. These awards will be presented at the luncheon on June 18, 2013 at the NNVAWI conference in Vancouver, British Columbia.  

We are now seeking nominations for 4 Excellence Awards in the areas of practice and policy, research, education and service to NNVAWI. Please consider nominating your colleagues, acquaintances, friends – we want to celebrate the work of our members!!

Nominees must be members of NNVAWI and be nominated by 2 members of the association. A member may receive each of these awards only once.

At the 2012 NNVAWI conference in Charlottesville, Virginia we were pleased to honour Dr. Robin Mason (Excellence in Education), Dr. Ursula Kelly (Excellence in Research) and Dr. Annie Lewis-O'Connor (Excellence in Service to NNVAWI).

Elections for the NNVAWI Board of Directors

As stipulated in our current By-Laws, we will be holding elections for all Board positions during our Business Meeting which will be held during the early morning of Tuesday June 18, at the NNVAWI conference. The Room location will be in the conference program. Please consider nominating yourself or a colleague. The Board will be proposing a slate of candidates, but as always, we welcome nominations from the floor. If anyone would like to run for a Board position but will not be at the Conference, please send Dr. Helene Berman an email ( with the name of the candidate and a very brief bio. She/he will be added to the slate. For your information, there are 4 Executive positions (President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer), 5 Members-at-Large, and 1 Student Representative. The current Board members are listed on the NNVAWI website.

Call for Poster Presentations- Extended to May 31, 2013

Please encourage your students or colleagues to submit a poster and attend the conference to present it! The second call for abstracts has been extended to May 31, 2013. Submit your poster title and 100 word abstract to Dr. Victoria Smye ( or Dr. Helen Brown (

NNVAWI Updates

Our objective is to disseminate current information about NNVAWI activities and the clinical, research and educational accomplishments of our members. In our revised monthly newsletter, we will introduce you to NNVAWI Board Members as well as spotlight the work of different members. A section of each newsletter will be committed to highlighting the work of student members. Information about international initiatives, upcoming violence-related conferences and other activities will also be disseminated.

RENEW your NNVAWI Membership for 2013

Check out the updated NNVAWI website The Board is actively working to ensure that the website is revised to meet member needs.  You can now pay your annual NNVAWI membership fee on the website. Regular 2013 membership (expires December 31, 2013) is $100, a one-year special/student membership is only $25. All existing members are reminded to logon and renew their membership as soon as possible. Please also share information about NNVAWI with your colleagues and networks, encouraging them to join.


It is exciting to see so many NNVAWI members on Facebook. I would like to encourage all of you to use this social media forum as a way to let all of us know about any exciting research, policy or education initiatives you are a part of. Also, if you publish in an Open Access, journal, please share the journal link on the Facebook page.
