PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP
ON
VIOLENCE, WOMEN, AND DISABILITY
The purpose of this four-hour interactive workshop is to stimulate interest among advocates, clinicians, and researchers to engage in the field of violence and disability. The primary objectives are to: 1) Describe the significant and unique dynamics of violence against women with disabilities; 2) Identify strategies for engaging consumers and community partners in the planning, implementation, and dissemination of work in the field; 3) Identify the contextual factors that impact disabled women's disclosure and response to violence; and 4) Provide pragmatic suggestions for working in this area including participant recruitment and retention, human subjects and mandatory reporting issues, disability-sensitive screening tools, and genuinely accessible assessment instruments, methodological approaches, and intervention programs. The workshop will be facilitated by a multi-disciplinary team of nurses, social workers, psychologists, consumer and community advocates with extensive research and programmatic experience in the field. Because the team is committed to expanding interest and involvement in the area of violence, gender, and disability, the workshop is free, but limited to 40 participants. There will be a $10 fee for CEUs for nurses and social workers. Contact Mary Oschwald, MSW, PhD at oschwald@pdx.edu or at (503) 725-9602 to register. Registrations must be received by March 16, 2006.
