Building on cutting edge conferences beginning in 1985, this three-day conference brings together people who play key leadership
roles in the health care response to violence against women. The conference is designed to foster increased awareness and understanding
and to promote appropriate health care and community responses to violence against women and their families. This conference is preceded
by a conference sponsored by the Family Violence Prevention Fund and will build on issues raised at that conference. Both conferences
will be held at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel and Towers, 64 Arlington Street, Boston, Massachusetts...
PURPOSE
The purpose of this conference is to allow involved people to come together and share the work they are doing to improve the health of
women and children. The conference will underscore the importance of forging alliances between health and human service providers,
violence prevention/intervention advocates, and communities to meet the goals of Healthy People 2010. These goals are to increase
women's quality and years of healthy life and eliminate health disparities for survivors of violence. An additional goal of this
conference is to increase the awareness of the role of the health care system in responding to violence against women.
OBJECTIVES
This conference is designed to assist participants to:
- Understand the effects of violence on the health of women and their families.
- Determine the barriers that prevent women, in different communities, from creating responses to ending violence.
- Highlight innovative models of service delivery accountable to women and children living with and surviving violence.
- Strengthen partnerships between health and human service providers and community advocates.
- Share cutting edge research regarding women and violence.
- Identify effective strategies for practice, education, research, and policy formation related to the health of women and
children survivors of violence.
CONFERENCE DESIGN
The conference will begin with a networking reception on the evening of Saturday, October 23, 2004. Presentations and posters will
focus on four issue areas: practice, education, research, and policy. A keynote speaker will begin the conference on Sunday, followed
by an afternoon of concurrent sessions. A panel presentation on Monday will be followed by a day of concurrent sessions.
Poster presentations will be available during the conference.
AUDIENCE
The conference is designed for nurses and other health and human service providers and violence prevention and intervention advocates
concerned with improving the health and well being of women and children who experience violence.
REGISTRATION
All presenters are required to register for the conference if they wish to attend other sessions.
Presenters need to cover their own expenses.
