Substantial progress has been made in raising awareness about violence against women both publicly and with health and social service professionals. At the same time, local, national and international efforts that are working toward addressing the multiple health, social, economic and legal issues faced by these women and children as well the prevention of violence have gained momentum. While such progress is encouraging, many pressing issues related to violence against women remain to be addressed. Successful responses to violence against women must be undertaken in collaboration with stakeholders across many sectors and consider the complexity and diversity of women's lives and communities in which they live.
This conference will provide an excellent opportunity for nurses, social workers, mental health counselors, physicians, advocates, community activists, and researchers working in the area of violence against women to share their knowledge, experience, and work.
The goal of this conference is to provide a forum for researchers, practitioners, and policy makers to:
- engage in dialogue about international research, practice innovations and policy initiatives that address the issue of violence against women and children from varied standpoints;
- reflect on the ways in which complexities and diversities can be addressed in research and practice with women and children who have experienced violence;
- consider how our collective knowledge can be used to support system and policy change that benefits women and children who have been exposed to violence, both locally and globally;
The program will include many opportunities for interaction, discussion and reflection related to the conference goals, including keynote addresses by experts in the field; workshops; oral and poster presentations; symposia; panel discussions and social events. Sessions that focus on research, practice innovations and/or policy will be offered.
